In 1876, John Bigelow commissioned his son-in-law, Charles Follen McKim, to design a carriage house for his estate on Washington Street in what is now Newport’s Historic Point section. This building is now recognized as a “concept piece” for the development of the style McKim later became known for – the America Shingle Style.

This 3,500 sq ft home was completely rebuilt in 2006 within the strict design guidelines of the local historic district. The interior is striking with gracious open living spaces, highest quality workmanship and materials, and the latest amenities. The floors throughout are oak of varying widths, the paneled doors are of Douglass fir and all the hardware is correct for the period of the building.

The first floor has a welcoming entrance, a library near the front door and 10-foot ceiling height. The 30-foot living room has a fieldstone wood-burning fireplace, hidden media components and French doors opening to a bluestone patio. A formal dining room opens to a magnificent kitchen with 3-inch stone countertops, a copper sink and top-end apprliances.

The second floor has a master suite and two ensuite guest rooms. The third floor is set up as the children’s suite with two bedrooms, a full bath and a playroom in the home’s distinctive turret.

The Carriage House sits on a 5,663 sq ft lot just one block from a waterfront park in Newport’s Historic Point.

In the historical study of the property, Newport Collaborative Architects said, “It could certainly be said that he 1876 Bigelow/Fairchild Carriage House is one of the most important carriage houses in Newport. The fact this is an early work of one of America’s most celebrated architects and coupled with the fact that it is a prime example of the Shingle Style gives it incalculable architectural value.”
